All Of The Good Things

How religion, flared jeans & The Oscars collide

We all pray, regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof. We turn to something outside ourselves to find strength, peace and guidance, to find something that grounds us. For me, that something is "the good things." Before you get concerned about this becoming a Sunday special, I assure you, it won't. After all, this is just a blog about clothes and makeup, right. I mean, who do I think I am? The Dalai Lama? Iyanla Vanzant?

"I start forming a list of all of the good things, all of the small moments that remind me that this day, this week, this life is and is going to be amazing."

It's just that somedays, in today's case, the Monday after a beautiful week and subsequent weekend, I like to remind myself of the beauty of the world and feed it into my day. This, to me, is as much a prayer as Hail Mary, full of grace.

Going through my morning routine, little things come to me. I start forming a list of all of the good things, all of the small moments that remind me that this day, this week, this life is and is going to be amazing. Here's an example of what that list was like this morning:

  1. Wow, Moonlight won Best Picture at The Oscars. It's about time!
  2. My hair didn't betray me by turning into a huge, frizzy mess over night. Thank you, hair.
  3. I woke up to the sun is streaming through my window. Spring is dancing at our door. BYE WINTER. Go on, get!
  4. Actually, my hair has been looking really great lately. I'm so happy I've learned to love (and style) my natural hair.
  5. Gah, my friends are so wonderful. I'm glad I have the chance to spend time with them, even though life is hectic and we're all busy as hell and sometimes too broke to do things together.
  6. Wait, these jeans still fit like magic even though I've totally gained like five pounds straight to my thighs. Issa miracle!
  7. I woke up to my first alarm (of five)—I'm not in a rush this morning!

The list goes on like this for a while as I go through my morning routine. I can slip into my favorite pair of flared jeans and be thinking of my mom's wonderful way of worrying about me. I can be applying eyeliner and feel #blessed that my wing came out even. Whatever it is that particular morning, I let it propel me. It's basically like a cup of coffee in the morning. So, what I've just done is compare religion to a cup of coffee. No one write me any angry letters, please.
